# Funding round outreach: how to use it without joining the pile.

A funding announcement is the most visible buying signal there is. That is its strength and its problem: every vendor in your category reads the same press release on the same morning.

**The short answer:**
**Funding round outreach** means contacting a company after it announces new investment, because fresh money usually comes with growth targets and new spending. It is a low-to-medium-strength, account-level signal with a window of roughly 60 days. The round is public, so you can mention it, but the message must be about the specific plan the money pays for, not the money itself.

## A funding round means budget arrived, and so did pressure to grow.

When a company raises, it has told its investors what it will do with the money: hire, enter a market, launch a product. Over the next few months, it will buy things that help it do that. Some of them could be yours.

But a funding round is a company-level event with no person attached, and it tells you nothing about whether the problem you solve is on the list. That is why funding ranks low-to-medium on the [signals table](https://signalbasedoutbound.com/buying-signals/), below hiring and job changes. It is a reason to look closer, not a reason to send.

## The announcement tells you what the money is for. Read it.

Most vendors stop at "raised a Series A". The useful part is the sentence after it.

| What the announcement says | What they will probably buy | Relevant if you sell |
| --- | --- | --- |
| "To expand into Europe" | Local hiring, compliance, go-to-market for a new region | Sales, recruiting, legal, localization tools |
| "To double the sales team" | Reps, ramp, pipeline generation | Sales and outbound tools, enablement |
| "To invest in the platform" | Engineers, infrastructure, data | Developer and data tools |
| "To move upmarket" | Security, enterprise sales skills, new buyer personas | Security, sales, account research |

If the stated plan has nothing to do with your product, skip the account, however exciting the round.

## Where to find funding announcements.

- **Crunchbase and similar databases.** Filter by round, date, industry and region. Most useful as a daily or weekly list.

- **LinkedIn.** Founders and investors post rounds. Following investors who back your ICP is a cheap early feed.

- **Google Alerts and startup news.** Free and fine for a short list of target accounts.

- **The company's own announcement.** Always read it before writing. It is where the plan is.

## Funding decays over about 60 days, and the first week is the worst week.

| Time since announcement | What is happening | What to do |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Days 1-7 | Inbox flooded with congratulations and pitches | Research. Maybe connect. Do not pitch. |
| Weeks 2-6 | Hiring starts, plans turn into budgets | Best window. Reach the owner of the relevant plan. |
| Weeks 6-9 | Vendors being chosen | Still workable, especially with a second signal |
| After ~60 days | Decisions made | Treat as a normal account |

This is the one signal where being first is a disadvantage. The "congrats on the raise" crowd arrives on day one. Arrive in week three with something specific.

## Qualify the round, then find the person who owns the plan.

- Does the company fit your ICP on industry, size and region?

- Does the stated use of funds touch the problem you solve?

- Who owns that plan? For "double the sales team", the head of sales, not the CEO who announced it.

- Is there a person-level signal at that company too? If so, start with that person.

## You can mention the round. Make the message about what comes next.

A funding round is public, so referencing it is fine. What does not work is treating the money as the reason they should buy.

*Don't:*

> Hi Lena, congrats on the $12M Series A! Now that you have budget, it's the perfect time to invest in a tool like ours. Free for a call Thursday?

It says "you have money, give some to me". She received twenty of these the same morning.

*Do (week three):*

> Hi Lena, the Series A note said Ledgerly is going after mid-market banks next. That usually means a new kind of buyer: procurement and risk teams instead of a single finance lead. How are you working out who to reach at each bank?

It uses the public announcement for what it says about the plan, then asks about the problem the plan creates.

## The common mistakes.

- **Racing everyone else to day one.** You become one of many identical messages.

- **Messaging the CEO by default.** They announced it. Someone else will spend it.

- **Funding as the only signal.** On its own it is weak. A list of "everyone who raised this month" is a cold list.

- **Ignoring the stated plan.** The use of funds is the most useful sentence in the announcement.

## Funding is strongest as the context, with a sharper signal on top.

- **Funding + [hiring](https://signalbasedoutbound.com/signals/hiring/) for your function:** the plan is funded and moving.

- **Funding + new leader:** a leader hired with the new money, reviewing the stack in their first 90 days.

- **Funding + someone there engaged with your post or viewed your profile:** the account is moving and a person is paying attention. Top of the list.

### When should I reach out after a company raises funding?
Usually two to six weeks after the announcement, once the first wave of pitches has passed and the plan is turning into budgets.

### Who should I contact after a funding round?
The person who owns the part of the plan your product helps with, not automatically the CEO.

### Is funding a strong buying signal?
Not on its own. It is a company-level signal everyone sees. It becomes strong when combined with hiring, a new leader or a person-level signal.
